on the fourth unterton release the black dog present a new sound somewhere between house and techno that the black dog call darkhaus. the original version of * council flat emptiness* is an infectious, futuristic, disco-tinged version of a progressive dancefloor workout bathed in strings, mellow melancholia and heavy bass. this is preceeded by a straight to the point stripped down version that multiplies the hypnotic elements of the original. on the b-side a 9-minute-30-something remix from luke slaters l.b.dub corp project drives the original into classic slater territory where techno and groove marry and electrify each other.

finally, a new, true doering, whose other name dirty is something of a fake-out: >i would< captivates the listener with clean, maximum minimal beauty, in typical doering style. the melodies swing gentle as a cradle, the beats take effect in a supporting role and the vocals, though sparsely deployed, complete the demand for inner harmony. the elements combine to create a languorous, warm feeling around the heart û a flawless hit.

the unifying atmosphere of the latest prruk 12inch by andreas florin is a hazardous one. with sublime high pitched tones and soaring sidechained beats, this is a top notch dancefloor record with elevating elements which gradually blend into a perfect package. with the dominant sound being reminiscent and yet thumping this is an all round venture into techno music. something for the collection as the sophomore package thats coming up is just as exciting as the first one.

the first release on project squared in a year, *make your mess* is a three track ep by melbournes craig mcwhinney. craig has been making music for years and releasing since the late 2000s on melbourne labels such as pinksilver, melbourne deepcast and his own haul music, also on labels based further afield such as brendon moellers steadfast and speedy js electric deluxe. craigs music is techno, but it isnt preoccupied with the 4/4, employing broken, swung and rolling drum patterns. his tracks often include melodic and harmonic elements and effects reminiscent of dub techno but without conforming to the pastiche template of the sub-genre. the make your mess ep is composed of the core title track and two additional tracks that arose as interpretations and variations on the initial production: *provocation is an excuse* is more furious and loud, *disengage* is more restrained. all three are around 125 bpm and were produced in the space of a month between september and october 2012.

after two years, the labels owner alex piccini returns with a new ep and first vinyl on kosmophono. a collaboration with subspace that delivers two great examples of what the label wants to bring this year. elpmis has all the elements to drive you mental, the dark bass goes underneath the skin and the melody building up slowly throughout the track can take you to another world.

rummage in some boxes of my favourite record store i found a cover that made me curious. l kubic & tagträumer² - the only thing in this world and on the flipside a remix by alle farben. when placing the needle at the beginning of the vinyl the first sounds were very strange. i thought that must be a record from the 60s lost in the tech-house box but than a straight beat turned everything different. a piano melody slowly sat down firmly in my ear and i was longing to know where the journey takes me. after a while an acidline pushed everything and i was sure at this time this is not a normal 4/4 tech-house record. alle farben remixed the themes very playful and i heard that he gives the elements more pressure for the club. so at the end i bought this one and i cannot imagine taking this unique record ever again out of my record case.

deep&disco recordings presents chicago-based band the right now with *call girl*, a gritty piece of live retro-soul with a package of varied and unique mixes. the a-side kicks off with hot toddy turning the funk up a notch in his characteristically musical way, in a mix that layers new live elements over the original and builds to a dazzling peak. following that is the original version: a straight-to-tape recording of the band with lush keys, tight rhythm section grooves, horn stabs, and vocals that drip with soul. then on the b-side, dicky trisco turns in a deep and dubby late-nite disco burner, and label head jkriv takes the tune into old-school house territory with thumping 909 drums and bouncing piano stabs. early dj support from kon, 6th borough project, lovebirds, ooft!, jacques renault and more.

with its non-placed devices and hard-to-pin-down aesthetic falling between electronic and psychedelic music and the warm-hued sounds of traditional acoustic instruments, burnt friedmans zokuhen,produced exclusively for vinyl, may be considered an extension of bokoboko. on this new double ep, too, the music focuses on uneven rhythms that dictate the groove for all the participating musical elements and display a formal logic to which all the instruments gladly succumb. with its even rhythm and proximity to dub reggae, the track kon ki (c2) shows that exceptions from the rule are permitted among the six new tracks and two re-worked bokoboko themes that round off this follow-up.

the e.p kicks off with she can dance, a slow burning acid number that has elements of deep, grooving house from the detroit school. in fact, the second cut low control bares the influence of detroit too, with its murky, dubbed-out chords ala luke hess moving into a punchy bassline with minimal but functional drum patterns. proceedings get a bit more bouncy on the smoking hat, a quirky acid romp on the less daft side of ceephax, and the perfect soundtrack to accompany a feature-length documentary about.... a smoking hat. finishing up the e.p is fudge fingas remix of low control, the only man qualified to make an already deep as fuck track even deeper. theres been some on-point criticisms about a lot recent deep stuff getting lost in noodly jazz territory, but we are in no danger of that nonsense with fudge fingas at the controls: accomplished a musician he may be, hes never been one to lose the way, and this mix proves his deft and subtle remix talents. dabj done done it again, and hopefully this is the first in a long line of productions from vernon.

the first release of the new dutch label pinkman contains four great tracks from drvg cvltvre, formerly known as ra-x. his music is slow, doomy, with broken disco and house elements, focussing on on hypnotic repetition and percussion. most of the music is made with electronic means, but is rooted in an organic, percussive approach.

vs take on house music comes at the listener from an outsiders perspective, as his native ukraine traditionally hasnt been a hotbed of this genre. consequently, his new album on nuearth kitchen, 13th district, hits your ears at an odd angle, as v (aka vakula, aka mikhaylo vityk) bends somewhat familiar tropes into fascinating, fresh shapes. clearly enamored of american funk, soul, and jazz, v recalibrates these familiar elements—the amino acids of house—into dream-logic, hypnotic scenarios that accentuate their visceral and cerebral qualities.

oliver hos alias for the less obvious techno stompers has always been full of surprises. although you can take the man out of the rave, but not the rave out of the man, raudives >traffic ep< is a retro futuristic team of hermaphrodites. four tracks that recall metal dance - the genre that never was - as well as disco elements, house hints, a techno taste and wave wonders. a record made for sven vaeth and trevor jackson, with >beams< already on heavy rotation with dixon and ame for a while now.

slag is a live techno band consisting of equal parts musicians and djs. the four experienced men draw on their experience from record shops dance floors and film-/ theater-music and have the common passion for techno in their neural pathways. with the passion for electronic music and classic synthesizers, they created a sound black as oil and white as freshly fallen snow. the band varies their performance with a large portion jam elements and makes their live shows tension filled in both club and concert performances. a concert by fire slag starts in the deepest dub and ends in a furious techno ballad.

the second part of the >what about talk about< series by baaz starts with >owls night<. a deep house tool with a vigorous bassline, some classic 909 elements, weird vocals and a pumpin piano chord. >those things< the second track on the a, infects you with positive vibrations and the magic mood. the b side enters with a remix by the highly skilled producer michel bauman under his moniker soulphiction. he turned the track called k.m.s. into an emotional and strong kicking house tune. a cut for the special moments. the original is produced by iron curtis & baaz . 90 bpm, a dippy pipe organ, wooden beats and shaky percussions. the last track >whatabouttalkabout< is a lush experimental listening slice, prober for the dark and chilly winterdays.

is it balearic hit their late 20s with another superb release - this time craig bratley steps up with analogue dreams. craig has earnt quite a reputation from only a handful of releases, including the weatherall favourite and classic cut >birdshell< on instruments of rapture. on analgue dreams, craig lays down a gently evolving, acid tinged piano slow burner, all mood and melody. first up on the remix we have the ever essential bonar bradberry who amps things up and takes a clonking bass riff down the disco for a real good time. on the flip crimea x pare the musical elements right down and build an epic remix from the raw ingredients, employing live percussion and shimmering synths. finally joes bakery dial down the tempo and incorporate some deft acoustic guitar and gentle moodswings alongside the musical elements of the original.
